US Senator Diane Feinstein is developing federal legislation under the “Eco-Labeling Act of 2008” to address the confusing proliferation of environmental product labels. The current draft would “establish a voluntary eco-label aware program intended to promote products with a reduced environmental impact during the entire life-cycle of the products, and to provide to consumers accurate, nondeceptive, and scientifically based information on the environmental impact of products.” This sounds like Life Cycle Assessment would become legislated on a voluntary basis. If it would become law, the EPA would establish a “Eco-Labeling Board” to accredit product certification centers and criteria for products of all kinds to carry a uniform eco-label.
