Quarter of the new LEED certified buildings do not save as much energy as their designs predicted

Faced with growing concerns that LEED buildings are not performing as predicted by energy modeling, the USGBC is now requiring that all newly constructed buildings provide energy and water bills for the first five years of operation as a condition for certification. The label could be rescinded if the data are not producted, according to USGBC officials.
USGBC’s research suggests that a quarter of the new LEED certified buildings do not save as much energy s their designs predicted and that most do not track energy consumption once in use.  The USGBC is planning meetings with building owners, developers and others in September and October to promote the building performance initiative which could lead to further revisions in the LEED program to ensure buildings reduce energy consumption as much as they can.  Mr. Scot Horst, senior vice president for LEED, called the issue of performance one of his “absolute priorities”..
