The 350.org group, formed in March 2008 by the environmental pioneer Bill McKibben, has gathered a global community of supporters to raise awareness of the power of community groups in changing public policy. The number 350 is based on the finding that 350 ppm is the safe upper limit that some scientists have identified for CO2 levels in the atmosphere. Currently the level of atmospheric CO2 is about 390 ppm, meaning that in order to reach 350 as the upper limit, it would be necessary to reverse the emissions rate rather than simply reduce it.
The 350.org group will be launching a massive marketing campaign through the media and internet on October 24 called the “Day of Action”. The effort is aimed at bringing attention to the fact that the global treaty on climate change that is to be discussed at the Copenhagen UN Climate Summit does not meet the 350 ppm upper limit.
There are over 4500 activities registered in 174 countries to take place on Oct 24 in support of this cause.
