The Energy Conservation Audit and Disclosure ordinance in the city of Austin now requires owners of houses that are more than 10 years old to have an energy audit performed before resale. The results of the audit will include recommendations for energy efficiency improvements disclosed to prospective buyers.
The auditors must be certified through the Building Performance Institute or the Residential Energy Services Network (RESNET), both national organizations.
Commercial buildings must display energy labels by June 2011 but are not yet required to achieve specific targets.
