President Obama signed an executive order calling on the federal government to reduce greenhouse gas.

Last year President Obama signed an executive order calling on the federal government to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 28% by 2020. Since then federal agencies have been developing plans to achieve that goal. Over 50 federal agencies have already submitted sustainability performance plans. The General Services Administration’s plan projects that by fiscal year 2015, more than 18% of its owned and leased buildings of 5,000 square feet or more will incorporate sustainable practices outlined by the Obama Administration. All new GSA buildings are expected to achieve zero-net energy by FY 2030. The GSA is also planning to design half of their historical preservation projects to achieve LEED Gold certification by FY 2015. The plans are coming together, but there is some question as to how they will be funded. A life cycle cost analysis is required for these building plans to realize true cost savings.
