A five-year initiative was launched as the Greater Philadelphia Innovation Cluster (GPIC). The initiative, one of several energy innovation hubs in the country, was funded by $129 million in federal grant money. The hub will focus on ways to improve the energy efficiency of US buildings. This energy innovation hub is located at the Philadelphia Navy Yard and includes a 1200 acre waterfront business development that includes 80 companies, 7500 employees and 15.5 million square feet of building space. Partners in the organization include PPG industries, Turner Construction, two DOE national laboratories, 11 academic institutions and regional economic development agencies.. The hub will conduct research and demonstrations of energy-efficient building technologies for new and retrofit construction with an emphasis on innovation for the building envelope.
