On June 20, 2012 Philadelphia opted into the Environmental Protection Agency’s Green Power Community Partnership, becoming the largest U.S. city to commit to using green power. The program is voluntary and will set Philadelphia on course to buy all of its electricity from renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind. Cities can join the initiative by committing to buy at minimum 2 percent of its energy from green sources and engaging local homes and businesses to invest in energy efficiency and similarly purchase green power.
