Three buildings united as one with perforated metal façade
The new Falcon Boxing Gym in Glenview, Ill., combines the gut rehab of an existing 12,000 sq. ft. warehouse with 30,000 sq. ft. of additions to create a premier professional boxing gym, indoor soccer training field and cardio/weight training facility.
The design, created by Filoramo Talsma Architecture in Chicago, required the demolition of a portion of the original structure to make room for a new clear-span indoor soccer field. The addition was constructed of architectural precast wall panels articulated in a Mondrian pattern that supports steel trusses that span 150 feet.
The structure was wrapped in 3,600 sq. ft. of perforated PAC-CLAD 7/8-in. Corrugated Panels. The .050 aluminum panels were finished in Weathered Zinc. The contemporary perforated panel façade was applied over an existing 1970’s masonry and cedar mansard roof and visually unifies three contiguous buildings.
The design of the renovated building creates a completely new and different look for the facility. “The perforated, corrugated screen really offers a stylish and modern look,” said Roy Palesny, sales representative in Petersen’s Elk Grove Village, Ill., headquarters office. “No one would know it’s not a totally new building.”
