Three colors of metal roofing enhance premier shopping center’s image

The major expansion of the Destin Commons shopping center in Destin, Fla., further establishes its reputation as the premier open-air lifestyle center offering the best in shopping, dining and entertainment on Florida’s Emerald Coast. The Phase II expansion adds 100,000 sq. ft. to the 500,000 sq. ft. family-oriented shopping environment. The pedestrian-friendly retail complex looks more like a European village with its corner turrets, old-fashioned clock towers and fountains plazas. Destin Commons also includes 70,000 sq. ft. of Class A office suites.

Petersen’s PAC-CLAD roof panels were specified on the original Destin Commons development in 2003, and continue to be the roofing material of choice for the high-end development. The Phase II expansion is clad with more than 30,000 sq. ft. of Petersen’s Snap-Clad 24 gauge, 16-in. wide panels finished in three complementary colors—Arcadia Green, Slate Gray and Terra Cotta, all of which are PAC-CLAD Cool Colors. The panels were fabricated at Petersen’s Acworth, Ga., plant.

Installation of the PAC-CLAD panels was completed by Infinity Metal Systems in Lake City, Ga. “It was a good job for us—probably one of the best we’ve done as far as workmanship,” said Ken Murray, owner of Infinity Metal Systems. “There were multiple buildings involved with various applications and complexities. We’re proud of it. There weren’t any issues or difficulties to overcome.” Infinity Metal Systems is a regular user of Petersen metal systems.

Although Destin Commons is located less than one-half mile from the Gulf in the corrosive salt water environment, steel was selected for the project versus aluminum due to budget constraints. Sherwin-Williams Coil Coatings, Petersen’s partner since 1972, was able to write a finish warranty on the steel application, according to Dave Landis, Petersen’s manager of technical services and field inspections based in Acworth.

Architectural design for the Phase II expansion was provided by JPRA Architects, Farmington Hills, Mich.

The Petersen distributor on the project was Commercial Roofing Specialties in College Park, Ga.
