Bright metal roofs add to festive environment at georgia water park
Six Flags Over Georgia’s new Hurricane Harbor water park near Atlanta includes 22 buildings of varying use and purpose, and all of them sport Petersen PAC-CLAD aluminum standing seam roofing panels. Multiple roof colors are featured throughout the park, making for a bright and stimulating environment.
The centerpiece of Hurricane Harbor is a 38,000 sq. ft. wave pool with a variety of water slide thrill rides. The park presents a tropical island theme with lush landscaping, beach scenery and an array of dining, shopping and lounging amenities.
Construction of the park was significantly hampered by unusually difficult winter conditions in the Southeast. According to Rick Primm, president of roofing contractor R.E. Primm & Co. in Tucker, Ga., “We were moving along pretty well when I suddenly got a call from the GC asking if we could finish up in four days. I thought we had at least two weeks before we had to be done. Several of the smaller buildings hadn’t even been built yet! We brought in extra crews and worked day and night to get it done. It was one of the tightest deadlines we’ve ever encountered.”
The project’s general contractor was McMichael’s Construction Co., Covington, Ga. “We had design responsibility for all aspects of the project except the pool systems,” said project manager Glenn Almand. “We have a great relationship and great confidence in R.E. Primm. We leaned on Rick Primm for the choice of the metal panel manufacturer and he recommended Petersen. He also suggested aluminum panels instead of steel for this application. It was a mad dash to the finish but we pulled it off.” Aluminum panels were chosen because all of the buildings would be near chlorinated water.
R.E. Primm & Co. installed a combined 25,000 sq. ft. of metal roofing including .032 aluminum 16-in. Snap-Clad standing seam panels and Petersen R-36 exposed fastener panels. The amount of Petersen material used on each of the various buildings ranged from 800 sq. ft. to 6,000 sq. ft. Three PAC-CLAD colors were selected to complement the island theme: Patina Green, Terra Cotta and Military Blue.
Architectural design was provided by Hill, Foley, Rossi and Associates in Duluth, Ga. The roofing supplier was CRS Inc. in Doraville, Ga. The project’s aluminum panels were manufactured in Petersen’s Acworth, Ga. plant.
