Bill would help utilities upgrade with non-wire alternatives

Legislators in Washington D.C. recently introduced a bill that would shape electric utilities in the area and mark a shift in utilities’ resource planning processes. The Distributed Energy Resources Authority Act would establish an independent body to provide oversight for utilities that want to make upgrades to their grid and consider having them invest in “non-wire” alternatives, which would involve geo-targeted investments in energy efficiency, demand response and distributed generation resources to defer capital upgrades.
