Custom green snap-lock roof adds signature look to new Cabela’s store

Design for the new Cabela’s store in Gainesville, Va. reflects the company’s well-known lodge-inspired theme featuring high ceilings, raw exposed wood, stone masonry and, of course, the chain’s signature green roof. In this case, more than 20,000 sq. ft. of Petersen’s 22 gauge Snap-Clad panels finished in custom color East Georgia Green combine with the rough-hewn log exterior to provide the iconic look that outdoor enthusiasts have come to know.

The Snap-Clad panels for the 80,000 sq. ft. Gainesville store were installed by Orndorff & Spaid in Beltsville, Md., and fabricated at Petersen’s manufacturing facility in Annapolis Junction, Md. Petersen panels previously have been installed on several Cabela’s locations throughout the United States.

“We’ve worked closely with Petersen since the opening of the Annapolis Junction plant years ago,” said Mike McKinney, Orndorff & Spaid project manager. “The Snap-Clad profile works well on a job like this. It snaps together quickly and securely and saves a lot of labor versus a system that must be mechanically seamed.” All trim for the job was fabricated at Orndorff & Spaid’s shop.

The general contractor on the project was L.F. Jennings in Falls Church, Va. This was the first Cabela’s store the GC had completed. “We were provided prototypical drawings for the roof that were very specific regarding terminations, transitions and flashing requirements,” said project manager Jim Godino. “We rely on our roofing contractors to recommend the manufacturer that they feel best meets the specs. O&S did a great job with the Petersen Snap-Clad profile. It was a great project to work on.”

Architectural design was provided by CR Architecture + Design in Denver.
